This is a simple recipe for homemade chip dip with sour cream. It’s one of the easiest dips you can make and comes together in 2 minutes!
This recipe uses simple ingredients (only 5 of them) and no onion soup mix nor mayonnaise or cream cheese!
It tastes best chilled. Even 30 minutes help the flavors develop (and it tastes a tad better) but if you are in a rush, feel free to serve it right away.
How to make chip dip from scratch
Ingredients needed
- Sour cream
- Dried parsley
- Dried dill
- Onion powder
- Celery salt
Tools needed
- Measuring cup
- Measuring spoons
- Medium bowl – you can also use a small bowl that holds at least 1 cup of liquid but sometimes when too full it is hard to mix all the ingredients well.
- Spoon
All you need for this recipe is a bowl large enough to hold 1 cup of sour cream. In general, it is better to use a larger vessel rather than a smaller one. It makes stirring easier. Then, you can simply transfer it into a serving bowl once all the ingredients are well combined.
What can I serve with chip dip?
Here are some serving suggestions:
- Potato chips
- Vegetables
- Pretzels
- Tortilla chips are also great option
Storage
Store this chip dip in an airtight container refrigerated. It should last up to 3 days.
Make ahead
You can make it a day ahead and store in an airtight container or sealed jar in the fridge.
Possible substitutions and variations
- Sour cream – I prefer using this for best results and that is what I recommend. You can use a combo of sour cream (⅔ cup) and unsweetened plain Greek yogurt (⅓ cup) though.
- Celery salt – use regular fine salt.
- Dried parsley/dill – if you don’t have one of these herbs on hand, feel free to use only one type.
- Onion powder can be substituted with garlic powder.
Does chip dip need to be refrigerated?
Yes, it does. Whether you make it ahead or have leftovers, always keep it in the fridge.
Useful tips
I have learned that product quality varies from brand to brand. The same goes for groceries. A teaspoon of fine salt can (believe it or not) have a different level of saltiness.
Also, it is more likely that my taste buds react to food differently than yours. For that reason, start with less seasoning – in this case the celery salt. You can always add more if needed. If, for some reason you over-seasoned your dip, simply add more sour cream to it.
This easy dip would also go well with potato fries. In case you are looking for mayonnaise or ketchup substitutes, you might like to try it.
If you are looking for more dip recipes, try some of these:
- Salmon Dip – My favorite fish dip that is ready in less than 5 minutes!
- Cottage Cheese Dip – If you are looking for something without cream cheese or mayo, this one is it!
- Artichoke Parmesan Dip – Another recipe with a 5-minute prep!
- Cheddar Cheese Dip – Serve it as a dip or spread.
- Feta Dip – Perfect last-minute dip recipe.
