How to make smoked salmon crostini
Ingredients:
- French baguette – or any long crusty loaf of bread
- Smoked salmon
- Cream cheese
- Dill
- Lemon
- Chives
Tools:
- Cutting board & knife
- Baking tray
- Butter knife – or small spatula for spreading the cream cheese
Process:
Thinly slice the baguette and toast it in the oven. This takes about 10 minutes but keep an eye on the time to avoid overcooking them. It literally takes about 10 minutes so making homemade crostini is definitely worth it!
When ready, you top them with cream cheese, a piece of smoked salmon and dill. If you like, add finely chopped chives as well. Finish it off with a drizzle of lemon juice over and sprinkle some lemon zest as well.
Serving suggestions
Why not serve them on a large platter/tray and try some other flavors as well? You could go with goat cheese crostini and chorizo crostini.
Or simply add them to your party menu alongside your favorite warm or cold appetizers.
Frequently asked questions
How do you keep crostini from getting soggy?
Plain crostini will not get soggy.
Topping toasted bread slices with other ingredients like cream cheese will cause them to go slightly softer but should not turn them soggy. Avoid using wet foods like tomatoes or cucumbers directly on the toasted bread.
How long will smoked salmon crostini last?
They should last for up to 2-3 hours without drying out.
Can I make it ahead?
Yes, you can. You can make the toasts in advance and store them in an airtight container until ready to assemble. They will last up to 4-5 days when stored properly.
Or assemble the salmon bites up to 2 hours before serving and keep them covered.
Top tips
Don’t overcook crostini! You want them to be crispy and golden brown around the edges but still a bit soft in the middle. Leaving bread slices in the oven way too long will turn your toasts into hard rocks and some of your guests may find it challenging to bite into them.
Count with about 10 minutes but keep in mind that every oven is different. When making them for the first time and not sure, take them out earlier rather than later.
Fresh dill works the best and gives the best flavor. However, if you are like me and don’t live in an area where you can get it fresh every time you go to a supermarket, don’t worry. Use its dried version. Or omit dill completely and use fresh chives instead.

Smoked Salmon Crostini
Smoked salmon crostini is a simple appetizer perfect for any party or family gathering. Easy to make and ready in 20 minutes, it’s ideal for last-minute entertaining!
Ingredients
- French baguette or similar, 24 slices
- 3-3.5 ounces smoked salmon (90-100 grams)
- ½ cup cream cheese, softened (120 grams)
- dill, dried or fresh
- ½ small lemon
- fresh chives (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 Fahrenheit/200 Celsius.
- Cut the baguette into ½-inch (1-centimeter) thick slices. Place onto a 9x13-inch (22x33-centimeter) or larger baking tray and bake for 8-10 minutes until golden brown (see note 1).
- Meanwhile, prepare the rest of the ingredients: slice salmon into about ¾-inch (2-centimeter) wide and 3-inch (8-centimeter) long strips. Cut the dill when using fresh.
- When the bread is toasted, take it out and let it cool (this will take only a few minutes). Then spread some cream cheese over, top it with salmon and dill. Drizzle with lemon juice. At last sprinkle finely chopped chives over.
- Transfer onto a serving plate and serve.
Notes
- Baking time can vary depending on your oven as well as the freshness of the bread so keep an eye on the crostini when making it for the first time.
- Fresh dill is best but if you cannot find it, use dried instead like I did.
- You can either drizzle some lemon juice over each crostini or top it with a little piece of lemon. I like to sprinkle some lemon zest over each toasted bread as well for the presentation.
- These canapes are very quick to make and for best results, I recommend assembling them shortly before serving. Now, you can toast the baguette in advance. You can also assemble the bites but no more than 2-3 hours before serving. This is mainly due to cream cheese drying out even when refrigerated in an airtight container.
